Ribeye Steak with French Onions and French Fries is a mouthwatering combination that brings together the best of hearty, indulgent flavors. The star of the dish is the ribeye steak, known for its rich marbling and tenderness, seared to perfection with a golden crust on the outside and juicy, flavourful meat inside. The steak is topped with caramelised French onions, slow-cooked to a deep golden brown, adding a sweet, savoury, and slightly tangy element that elevates the dish with a burst of flavour reminiscent of French onion soup.

To complete the meal, it’s paired with crispy French fries, golden and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, providing the perfect contrast to the succulent steak and sweet onions. Here’s a delicious recipe for Ribeye Steak with French Onions that combines the rich, tender flavor of a ribeye steak with the sweet and savory taste of caramelized onions, reminiscent of French onion soup:

Ingredients:

For the Steak:

  • 2 ribeye steaks (1-1.5 inches thick)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3-4 sprigs fresh thyme (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed (optional)

For the French Onions:

  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Caramelize the Onions:

  • In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the thinly sliced onions and season with a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20-30 minutes.
  • Add the sugar and thyme leaves, then continue to cook until the onions are golden and caramelized, around 40 minutes in total.
  • If using, stir in the balsamic vinegar for extra depth of flavor.
  • Once done, remove from heat and set aside.

2. Prepare the Ribeye Steaks:

  • Remove steaks from the fridge and let them come to room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  • Season both sides of the steaks generously with salt and pepper.
  • Heat a cast iron skillet over high heat and add the olive oil.
  • When the skillet is very hot, add the steaks. Sear for 3-4 minutes on each side until a deep brown crust forms.
  • Lower the heat slightly and add the butter, garlic, and thyme to the pan. Spoon the melted butter over the steaks as they cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, or until the steaks reach your desired doneness (125°F for medium-rare, 135°F for medium).
  • Let the steaks rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

3. Serve:

  • Top the ribeye steaks with the caramelized French onions, and garnish with fresh thyme if desired.
